Department of Coastal environment

Overview
Message of the Chairman

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the department of Coastal Environment at the University of Jordan-Aqaba branch. The Jordanian coast of the Gulf of Aqaba represents the only marine access of Jordan, where most of the sea-based activities are concentrated. This environment is unique in terms of its special marine life, represented mostly by intensive coral reef ecosystems and seagrass meadows. Such valuable environment is precious in all aspects, including its ecological and socio-economic values.
The University of Jordan has recognized the importance of this environment since the late seventies, when it established the Marine Science Station (MSS). In 2009, the university started its Aqaba branch, with the faculty of Marine Sciences being on top priority to start with. The department of coastal environment is one of the two departments in this faculty. The bachelor program in the department focuses its core subjects on the theoretical and applied aspects of the physical, chemical and geological fields of the marine environment. Other supportive subjects are also considered in order to strengthen the background of its undergraduate students.

The faculty members carry out research in various disciplines in the marine environment in the Gulf of Aqaba, in addition to participation in research projects together with colleagues from the region, Europe and the USA. The department is closely associated with the MSS, where the research and teaching laboratories are located. The students are encouraged to participate in the ongoing research projects to get trained on the most recent techniques used in the field and the lab. Graduates of our program will be able to continue their post graduate studies in any field of their choice in the marine environment. In addition to this, they can work in marine parks, sea-related consultations, environmental agencies, environmental offices, schools and other related subjects.

In 2013 and in conjunction with the graduation of the first batch of students from the faculty, the department began offering the Master (M.S.) degree of Marine Sciences.  The program is designed to provide its graduates with the knowledge and skills that makes them competent in the various marine fields (biological, physical, chemical and geological). Due to the interdisciplinary nature of modern marine sciences, both departments: Marine Biology and Coastal Environment will be jointly supporting this program.
