Our vision is to be the centre of excellence in basic and marine sciences in Jordan, to produce scholars who can help the country’s economic development through sustainable utilization of inland and marine aquatic resources. In response to this, we strive to educate scientists and policy specialists with the broad vision needed to address national, regional and global problems. Meeting these problems often demands expertise in several disciplines, and our interdisciplinary curriculum teaching, research, and outreach reflects this reality.

The school of Basic and Marine Sciences is an interdisciplinary unit. As such, it draws school and student participation from a number of many other academic units of the university units. The school mission is to provide academic leadership in basic and marine sciences; its goals are to:
• Provide an excellent education and an interdisciplinary curriculum, emphasizing theoretical concepts of how ocean processes function, critical research thinking, independent research and hands-on technical and field training at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

• Provide an excellent education and an interdisciplinary curriculum, emphasizing theoretical concepts of how ocean processes function, critical research thinking, independent research and hands-on technical and field training at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
• Provide effective undergraduate and graduate programs, emphasizing critical thinking and independent research, that prepares students for successful careers in science, education, technology and public service, and allow them to pursue careers in industry, government, and academic settings.
• deliver innovative, excellent instruction at the undergraduate and graduate levels;
• conduct high quality scientific research and effectively communicate research results, through publication and presentation, to both academic and public audiences;
• extend technical assistance in addressing marine sciences-related issues and concerns;
• Address regional, national and international issues and concerns.
• addressing important scientific questions related to the nature, use, development, protection, and enhancement of marine resources,
• applying technologically-advanced approaches to field, laboratory, and analytical problems,
• Providing consultative assistance to practical marine problems and marine policy.
Because our instructional emphasis is on teaching and training BSc and M.Sc. students, a broad range of introductory and undergraduate courses are offered for students interested in the field. Most classes are taught in main campus during the school year; however, some practical classes, labs and field work are offered at the Marine Sciences Station in Aqaba City.
Since research is an integral part of teaching, especially at the graduate and advanced undergraduate levels, our faculty members maintain active research programs throughout the year. Graduate students and a selected number of undergraduate students will be allowed to participate in faculty-directed research projects, often receiving financial support from grants.

In pursuit of its vision, school of Basic and Marine sciences will strive to produce outstanding internationally accredited graduates in the fields of basic and marine sciences/oceanography with capabilities of learning and research, and are capable of building international collaborations, to contribute to the enrichment of education, socioeconomics, environment and resources of the country with special reference to marine resources and environments.
The scientific programs at the school of Basic and Marine sciences share the University's strong commitment to teaching, research and public service. We strive to describe, understand and predict the processes that regulate marine systems and connect these to the other components of the Earth's system, to assess the significance of change in marine systems and its consequences for humans and other organisms
